Fishery Survey of India (FSI) is the nodal fishery Institute in India with the primary responsibility of survey and assessment of fishery resources in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and adjoining seas for promoting sustainable exploitation and management of the marine fishery resources. Started as pilot project known as Deep Sea Fishing Station in the year 1946 it evolved as a Survey Institute in the year 1974 and was named the Exploratory Fisheries Project with Base Offices located in all the maritime states. With changes in priorities in marine fisheries development and growing need for information on resources, the institute underwent a major structural and functional transformation in 1983 and was rechristened as Fishery Survey of India.
